An investigation found NYC schools to be in violation of Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in education.
According to a settlement, the U.S. Department of Education found the city fell short on girls sports teams by 3,862 spots, the Wall Street Journal reports. The complaint was originally filed by the National Women's Law Center in 2010, and resulted in an investigation which found that girls' enrollment in fell vastly under that of boys'.
It was not, however, for lack of trying on the part of schools. The investigation revealed that half of the 282 requests made by principals for more girls teams from 2008-09 and 2010-2011 were rejected by the city, and that schools proposing new teams were burdened with having to shoulder the accompanying costs during the first year, as well as have an existing facility.
A spokesman for the city Department of Education told the paper that an additional $1 million would be distributed over the next four years to add 24 girls teams annually. A survey will also be distributed to girls when they reach 8th grade in order to determine whether interests are being unmet.
