One of Indian Point's nuclear reactors was shut down earlier today, but there's nothing to worry about. Yes, their evacuation plan is a tad dicey, and sure, this sort of thing has happened before (and may keep happening for many years to come!) But it's time we all just put our faith in Entergy and be thankful we don't live in Philadelphia.
The AP reports that reactor 2 malfunctioned and shut down automatically as "there was no use for the steam produced by the reactor." A Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspector was on the scene, but probably just to borrow a bootleg Game of Thrones season finale from one of the plant's employees. We've reached out to Entergy to see if they have pinpointed what went wrong. In the meantime, check out this report about how the damage done at the Fukushima plant in Japan last year was worse than was initially believed.
