As you probably know, one of the most powerful tropical storms in recorded history destroyed part of the Philippines last week. Typhoon Haiyan (which is being called Yolanda in the region) has left the country's coastal areas in a condition that one survivor called "worse than hell." Estimates on the death toll are still premature, but some officials believe more than 10,000 people may have died.
"There are too many people dead," Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, told CNN. "We have bodies in the water, bodies on the bridges, bodies on the side of the road."
The devastation has knocked out lines of communication to part of the country, and many Filipino-Americans have been unable to contact loved ones. “I Facebooked my brother, but I haven’t gotten a reply,” Jersey City resident Christine Villamayor told CBS2. ”I don’t know if it’s just the signal. I’m worried."
CBS reports that a charity run in Central Park this weekend raised $100,000 for the Philippines. Here are other ways to donate:
- The World Food Programme has already allocated $2 million for relief, and is sending 40 metric tons of fortified biscuits to the area. You can text the word AID to 27722 to donate $10 or give online.
- Among other things, the Red Cross has already delivered thousands of hot meals to survivors. You can donate here.
- AmeriCares is shipping enough medical aid for 20,000 survivors, including antibiotics, wound care supplies and pain relievers.
- World Vision is bringing much-needed supplies to evacuation centers across the region. Their website explains that "for as little as $24 you can provide essential supplies like a blanket or mosquito net. Just $33 can supply clean water and hygiene kits for a family."
- UNICEF is focused on bringing essential medicines, nutrition supplies, safe water and hygiene supplies to children and families in the area. You can donate here.
- The Salvation Army promises that 100 percent of all disaster donations will be used for relief efforts and "to immediately meet the specific needs of disaster survivors." You can text TYPHOON to 80888 to Donate $10 or give online.
