Residents in a West Village apartment building have been suffering for years from a stench coming from one apartment belonging to an elderly woman with OCD. At first it wasn't clear to outsiders what was happening in the apartment, and when the NYPD was called in an officer saw a green substance on the top of the door—he told the landlord: "That's it, that's the green slime, that comes from a body decomposing in an apartment." So, apparently that happens.
However, there were no decomposing bodies in the home—just massive piles of stuff, bags of soiled cat litter, and swarms of flies and other assorted bugs. The bugs and smell were starting to take over neighboring apartments, where—if they hadn't already moved out—residents created makeshift barriers.
The entire sordid story is over at Fox 5 in full visual glory—but basically an elderly woman with dementia let her friend move in with her back in 2004. When the woman was relocated to a nursing home, her friend claimed she was her lesbian lover and demanded rights to the rent controlled apartment. Now after a series of legal battles, she's been put out on the street, and it's unclear if she's found a new place to live (and hoard).
