A hit-and-run taxi driver was arrested after he allegedly fatally struck and dragged a woman who was lying in the street in Stuyvesant Town yesterday.

Police say the incident happened around 3:35 a.m. Saturday morning, when 44-year-old victim Kenya Flores apparently lay down in a bus lane on the east side of 1st Avenue between East 16th and 17th streets. Yellow cab driver John Bangura, 68, apparently swerved into the bus lane to veer around a stopped vehicle, struck Flores, and dragged her down the street. Bangura then fled the scene.

Flores was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. It is unknown why she was lying in the street before the incident happened, but a cane believed to belong to her was found at the scene.

A piece of Bangura's bumper was also found, and he was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
