Since the devastating earthquake in Japan led to a Chernobyl-level nuclear crisis around the Fukushima reactor there, we've been concerned with the safety of our own nearby nuclear and at-risk plant, Indian Point. We weren't that reassured when we looked at the plant's evacuation plans and the fact that Putnum county is now distributing potassium iodide to nearby residents does nothing to make us feel better.

The potassium iodide pills, which are used to help prevent thyroid glands from absorbing radioactive iodine in the atmosphere, were given out at a town hall meeting yesterday in Carmel. But it has nothing to do with anything else, guys, really! The Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Services in Putnam County assures CBS that the distribution was "not prompted by either the recent killing of Osama bin Laden or the tsunami disaster in Japan." Riiiiight. Meanwhile, anyone in the county who wants the pills can get them here.

When can we order those Fukushima plates again?
