Raymond Gumti, the former police cadet who sold his mom's personal info to a gang of ID thieves got a stern talking to from a judge at his sentencing yesterday. Not to mention a $13,000 bill to pay.
"This was extremely foolish on your part," Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter told the 23-year-old before handing down a sentence that gives the former cadet a conditional discharge—as long as he pays off the $13,000 the scammers racked up in credit card charges in his mom's name. "You dedicated your whole life to become a cop. You received a bachelor’s from John Jay College...and you threw it all away."
Gumti, who was arrested just days before he was to graduate from the Police Academy, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in the case. He had been paid $5,000 for his mom's info by an identity theft ring. Unfortunately for him, that same massive ring later brought down by the same police force he wanted to work for. Cue the Alanis...
