The former Bronx Assistant District Attorney who was charged with a DWI after an accident on the Major Deegan Expressway pleaded guilty to drunk driving this morning—and got off with no jail time as a result. Jennifer Troiano, who was allegedly "treated like a queen" and given preferential treatment after the accident, was fired from her job Jan. 13, and she was apologetic in court today: "I accept responsibility for my actions," she told the judge. "It was my distinct honor to serve the people of Bronx County as an assistant district attorney. Finally, I am deeply sorry for what I have done and harm I've caused others."
Troiano had been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and DWI in a three-car pileup on the Major Deegan Expressway in August 2010. In the course of that case, it was revealed that Troiano had been stopped in 2009, and was suspected to have been driving drunk—but police didn't charge her. And it now seems that she identified herself as an assistant district attorney to get out of a potential DWI arrest. She was also allegedly stopped for two other DWI arrests in 2004 and 2006, but she wasn't formally charged with anything.
Instead of jail time, she'll have her driver's license suspended for six months, will have an ignition lock installed in her car, take a course on the dangers of drunk driving and pay a $750 fine and another $400 in court fees. Her lawyer added that she plans to donate her car to charity: “I can’t tell which charity, but she does a lot of volunteering with animal rights,” lawyer Stephen Epstein said.
