Cruise ships. While they may be an irritant to the eyes (and lungs) of folks in Red Hook, there is no doubt they are a boon to our local economy—last year cruise passengers dropped $145 million in town, up 54% from 2009. So it makes sense that the city would do its best to celebrate those boatloads of money–especially as they are leaving. Which is exactly what is going to happen tonight around 6:45 p.m. when the three biggest queens in town say bon voyage.
Cunard currently has not one, not two, but three of its mammoth liners docked on our shores (the Queen Mary 2 is in Red Hook while the Queen Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth are in Manhattan) and all of them are departing this evening. Around quarter to seven they should all rendezvous at the Statue of Liberty for a fireworks display before splitting. So don't worry if you see stuff going down by Lady Liberty tonight. It's all part of the plan.
Meanwhile, we've spent the last few minutes checking out the webcams from the liner's bridges pretending we were Michael Scott pretending he was in Titanic.
