Three years after NYPD captain Alberto Sanchez was found guilty of beating his cop girlfriend in the street, and a year after he finally served 40 of his 60 day sentence on Rikers, the NYPD has decided to show Sanchez the door. But he's getting a nice parting gift: an estimated $75k annual pension.
If Sanchez had been found guilty of a felony he would have been immediately dismissed and seen his pension go up in smoke. But since he was only convicted of a misdemeanor, his job and pension are at the commissioner's discretion. Which is to say, as Bloomberg is railing against police and fire pensions, Ray Kelly is giving a fat one to a man who dragged his ex-girlfriend down the street by her hair and kicked her into his car until her leg was numb.
Needless to say, Sanchez's ex, Sharon Gandarilla, is not amused by the development. "It's a slap in the face to me. It is the NYPD condoning domestic violence," she told the Post. The pair had previously had a consensual relationship (while both were in other relationships) which turned increasingly ugly after Gandarilla tried to break it off. Gandarilla's federal civil-rights lawsuit against the NYPD, which still employs her, and Sanchez is working its way through the system.
