Well this is awkward. Last night police detained Talya Ben-Eliezer, 39-year-old daughter of former Israeli defense minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, at JFK on an outstanding "no-bail warrant" out of Florida. The dual American-Israeli citizen was booked as a "fugitive from justice" on a drug charge from the Sunshine State reportedly to do with some oxycontin she bought without the proper prescription.
According to the Post's sources, Talya "had been in Florida about a year undergoing medical treatment for a seizure condition." The arrest warrant was written after her treatment though, when she tried to get herself some Oxy on the sly (or, in official speak, she "obtained a controlled dangerous substance by fraud."). Ben-Eliezer, whose father was defense minister in 2001 and 2002, was not travelling on a diplomatic passport and, according to the tabloid's sources, only tried to take advantage of her position after she was detained and reportedly told Customs agents she was the daughter of a senior member of the Israeli government.
It is not immediately clear where she is being held or whether she has been arraigned yet. Interestingly, but totally unrelated, the arrest happened just moments after a TSA screener in the same terminal was arrested for stealing from a man going through security. Last night was a busy one at JFK!
