After being arrested for DUI in Franklin Lakes, NJ on Wednesday, former Mets and Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden spoke to reporters yesterday but didn't want to talk about the arrest, "When the time is right I will…but now's not the right time, sorry."
Gooden, who has had a history of drug problems, was pulled over for allegedly rear-ending a neighbor's car, and then he left the scene of the accident, saying he needed to take his son to school. Then: "He was arrested minutes later for driving under the influence - with his 5-year-old son unrestrained in the backseat." He was eventually charged with driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, and many others.
However, Gooden's agent Ronald Goldstein said that Gooden was not intoxicated, "All the facts have been distorted by the media. He is a very good father and a very good friend. The amount of lies and untruths being spread hurts me." Goldstein claims that Gooden was prescribed Ambien because his wife recently had a baby girl and that the former pitcher was sleep deprived (also, Gooden had recently traveled cross-country from an autograph signing). Goldstein said, referring to how his client had been sober since 2006, "Four years of hard work have been destroyed. It’s just appalling."
