The toddler who was critically injured on Saturday night when a car careened into a bus stop in Brooklyn may not regain consciousness. Three-year-old Denim McLean was standing with his mother Wendy near the corner of Utica and Church Avenues when a 2004 Lincoln sedan jumped the curb and plowed into a group of pedestrians, injuring nine, the most serious of which were the mother and her son. The Daily News reports that Wendy McLean remains in a partial coma, but is expected to survive. Initially police indicated that there was no criminality suspected. But the Wall Street Journal reports that the driver may face charges because she ran a red light.
According to a law enforcement official, the driver allegedly hit the gas and not the brake as she approached the red light on Utica Avenue, before losing control and jumping the curb. The 48-year-old woman driving the car and her 28-year-old passenger were among the injured, and both were listed in stable condition yesterday.
Family members say that Wendy McLean, who owns a nightclub and a cafe in Bed-Stuy—Denim Lounge and Denim Café—doesn't know about her son's condition. “This is going to kill her," Denim's aunt Deidra McCorkle said.
