A driver fatally struck a woman crossing the street in Brooklyn early Friday, then drove away, police said.

The woman was crossing Pitkin Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard in Brownsville around 6:50 a.m. when the driver of a gray vehicle heading west hit her, according to the NYPD.

Police said officers who responded to a 911 call about the collision found the woman with severe trauma to her head and body and emergency medical workers pronounced her dead at the scene.

Authorities did not immediately release her identity.

The NYPD said it has not yet made any arrests in the case as it investigates the incident.

Police data shows it's this year's first fatal crash in the 73rd Precinct, which covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill. New York City reported a record-low 205 traffic deaths across the five boroughs last year, down 19% compared to 2024.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
