Police are looking for a driver they say left the scene of a fatal crash with a pedestrian near the Cross Bronx Expressway on Sunday evening.

Officers called to the intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway Service Road and Ellis Avenue in Unionport around 6 p.m. found a man with serious injuries to his head and body, according to the NYPD. First responders took him to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police later determined the man was struck by an SUV driver heading west on the service road. NYPD officials said the man was trying to cross the service road, but they’re still investigating if he was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Police did not immediately identify him as they worked to notify his family. They said they did not yet have information on the model of the car or the driver who hit him.

NYPD data shows one pedestrian traffic death was reported through Nov. 23 this year in the 43rd Precinct, which encompasses the neighborhoods around Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester. Three pedestrians were killed in crashes in the precinct last year through the same date, the data shows.

Thirteen pedestrians died in Bronx traffic crashes this year through Nov. 23, down from 18 in the same timeframe last year, the data shows.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
