A driver going the wrong way struck and killed a woman crossing a West Village street Thursday, NYPD officials said.
Police said the 27-year-old woman was walking south on Seventh Avenue around 8:30 a.m. when the driver of a 2020 GMC van hit her as he drove west on Morton Street, a one-way street where traffic is supposed to flow east.
First responders took her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police did not immediately release her identity as they worked to notify her family.
Police said the 61-year-old driver stayed at the scene and has not been arrested or charged with a crime.
The NYPD said its investigation is ongoing.
Official data shows there were no traffic deaths in the Sixth Precinct, which covers the West Village, this year through Oct. 26, down from one by the same point last year. Total collisions in the precinct have risen 4% year over year. Citywide, traffic deaths have declined 16%, the data shows.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
