Last year the DOT wrapped up a successful pilot program putting countdown timers at dangerous intersections, and now the department has begun rolling the timers out citywide. Right now they aiming to have 43 timers up by the summer, but soon enough the city hopes to install 1,500 of the timers around town.

"Crossing the street doesn’t need to be a guessing game,” DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said in a statement yesterday. “New York City’s streets have never been safer, but we need to do even more and countdown signals can help pedestrians avoid getting caught short.”

Now, we still miss when New York's crosswalks said "Walk" and "Don't Walk" instead of showing the White Man/Red Hand pictures, but what can you do? Since our new crosswalk signals have a tendency to flake out, adding countdown timers to busy intersections seems like a no-brainer to us.
