The cyclist who fell off his e-bike after colliding with a pedestrian in Central Park earlier this week has died of his injuries.
Charles Cheeseboro, a 43-year-old Harlem resident, was pronounced dead on Wednesday, two days after he was rushed to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center with serious head trauma.
According to police, Cheeseboro was riding a pedal-assist e-bike north on East Drive when he collided with a 77-year-old pedestrian in the crosswalk near the Loeb Boathouse. Cheeseboro was thrown from his bike and knocked unconscious, cops said. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries.
There is a traffic light at the intersection, but police are still unsure who had the right of way at the time of the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
Cheeseboro's death marks the 20th cyclist killed on city streets this year, representing a twofold increase from the total bike fatalities in all of 2018. Total traffic fatalities are up more than 20 percent year-to-date, according to data maintained by the NYPD.
