Newark Mayor Cory Booker wants us to know that the stir over comments he made on Meet the Press condemning the Obama campaign's attacks against Mitt Romney's old gig at Bain Capital is all just a big misunderstanding.
Last night on Rachel Maddow's show, Booker explained that after hearing the president split hairs, he completely agrees with his non-position on private equity. "He was not condemning any particular firms, he was focusing in on a guy who's bragging about his job creation record—to me, I think that's fair game." Also fair game: Booker received at least $36,000 from Bain donors and $565K overall from the financial industry in 2002.
Romney has taken significantly more cash from the financial industry than Obama has, this cycle, but the president is no slouch. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, President Obama received at least $16.1 million from the financial, insurance and real estate sector in 2008. $1 out of every $8 contributed to his campaign and the DNC came from those industries. Don't bite the expertly tanned, manicured hand that feeds you, or else you may have a tougher time getting people to come to your dinner party.
