The Manhattan parents of a 15-month-old girl are relieved after their baby was saved yesterday, thanks to the quick actions of a police officer.
Police officers Michael Konatsotis and David Roussine responded to a call about an unconscious baby at 207 East 74th Street, and found parents Diana and Jason Schechter with their unresponsive baby. Konatsotis, a former EMT, checked the baby's condition and started to perform CPR in the patrol car after determining she wasn't breathing.
They headed to the hospital, with the parents in the back of the cruiser and Roussine driving. By the time they got to Weill Cornell Hospital, the baby had been revived. Konatsotis told 1010 WINS, "As soon as we pulled up, the baby gave a burp and it was just an amazing feeling. The color started coming back and the air came back and we saw this beautiful baby starting to cry and that was the greatest sound that we heard."
The hospital then treated and released her. The FDNY has free CPR classes—you can sign up here. There are more specific CPR classes for infants as well (which usually cost money); the Red Cross also has a reference sheet for pediatric CPR.
