Detective Ed Zigo, famous for catching serial killer David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz, died on Saturday of cancer on his Long Island home. He was 83. Zigo found Berkowitz by tracing a parking ticked issued to him at the scene of his last murder. He went to Berkowitz's house, and Zigo's son said, "According to my father, he introduced himself and said, 'Hi, David. I'm Detective Zigo.' Berkowitz said to him, 'Hi, Ed. I'm the Son of Sam.' "

His daughter said of the investigation, "I remember when he did actually catch him. He made a phone call from Yonkers... 'If I think what's going to happen happens, you can say your dad caught the Son of Sam.' He told me not to talk to anybody...He didn't come home for three days." He was promoted to detective first grade after catching Berkowitz, and after retirement he served as a technical adviser on movies, including the TV movie "Out of the Darkness" about his own life. He was portrayed by Martin Sheen.
