The police shot and killed a man who was wielding a knife in a Bronx apartment building earlier this morning. The knife-wielding man had been in a dispute with his roommate, and the cops were called to the apartment at 11:20 p.m. A neighbor said, "[A] cop said, 'Everybody go back to your apartments.' As soon as we hear them say that - not even a full second after - you hear boom-boom!"
A cop from the 49th Precinct arrived at the Rhinelander Avenue building around 12:30 a.m., according to WABC 7. He confronted the knife-wielding man, who lunged at him, so the cop fired multiple times. The knife-wielding man suffered numerous shots and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Daily News adds, "Neighbors said the dead man had recently moved into the Rhinelander Ave. building and had been known for acting strangely." A neighbor explained, "He's a new tenant. I don't think he's been here more than a year. He's from an agency ... He looked really spacey." And the dead man's downstairs neighbors said, "This was happening for three days straight. You'd hear big booms like they were dumping furniture. It escalated to tonight."
