Things not to say when you're indicted on felony assault charges for punching a woman so hard you put her into a coma from which she many never recover: your family is hurting. After his court appearance yesterday, Queens electrician Oscar Fuller tried to apologize, but like the famous JT song, the words just came out wrong.
First of all, Fuller decided it would be a good opportunity to point out that victim Lana Rosa's family aren't the only ones grieving right now, you know. "It's crushed my whole family," he told the Post, adding, "It's crushed her family, as well." Nice of him to remind everyone that, seeing as Rosa, 25, can't speak for herself on account of her suffering permanent brain damage and all. Secondly, Fuller's apology was one of those carefully-worded mea culpas in the grand "mistakes were made" tradition. "I'm very, very sorry for the situation she is going through," Fuller said.
It is indeed regrettable that she is in this "situation," but what do you expect Fuller to do about it; get down on his knees and beg forgiveness for putting a woman on death's door and then driving away? Apparently not from his point of view; yesterday he again justified his knockout punch by explaining, "She hit me first, and as you know, there are cameras everywhere in New York City." Fuller's lawyer claims the Manhattan DA is in possession of surveillance footage that shows his client, who has prior arrests for weapons possession and felony assault, acting in self-defense after the 4-foot-11, 100-pound Rosa allegedly attacked him.
