Is America ready for a Vice Presidential candidate with some heft? When New Jersey Governor Chris Christie vetoed gay marriage in the Garden State it was, as many acknowledged, a move designed not to please his constituents (a majority of whom support marriage equality) but to make keep him palatable to the GOP's base. So naturally Christie—who briefly toyed with making a play for the White House this go-round—is now making sure to leave the door open for this year's GOP veepstakes.

The governor hit up Face The Nation yesterday to talk about his man Mitt, who he says will defeat Rick Santorum in the end (maybe through a contested convention?). Of the latter, he pointed out: "He's trying to appeal to a certain sector of our electorate."

"What people care about more is getting a job; being able to pay their mortgage and put food on the table," Christie said, just like he was told to. "Those are the issues Mitt Romney is hitting head-on right now. In the end Governor Romney, who has real conservative values but has real appeal to independents across the country, is going to be the nominee."

As for the chances of a Romney/Christie ticket? "If you're a betting man," Christie told host Bob Schieffer, "bet on me being the governor of New Jersey into next year." Still, he won't entirely rule out the possibility! Because he's just such an all around good guy, Christie says "if Governor Romney were to come and talk to me about it, I'd listen." Awww. Translation? "Not this time, but remember me in 2016!"
