Yesterday, our hearts went out to Sponge Bob, a massive 30-pound kitty currently residing at the Animal Haven Shelter in SoHo. We very much want someone to adopt him and put him on a strict diet. But it seems NY is filled with fat cats who need a loving home—and that includes Garfield, a 40-pound cat whose owner died this week.

The 10-year-old tabby was brought into the North Shore Animal League on Long Island on Thursday. “My first reaction was astonishment,” North Shore veterinarian Gerard Laheney told the Post. “This is the fattest cat I have ever seen.” They write on Facebook, "despite his abnormally large size, he appears to be healthy otherwise. Garfield is exceptionally sweet and instantly reached out to be petted."

You can read more about Garfield and pet obesity here. A gentle reminder: June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month. So someone, please adopt Garfield. And put him on a diet. And also adopt Sponge Bob, and do the same. And then write Mayor Bloomberg and remind him that humans can decide whether or not to drink that 32oz soda—but pets don't get to decide how competent their owners are.
