The so-called "Vaseline Bandit" has been busted. Police this morning arrested Luis Gonzalez, the 40-year-old man they say was behind a string of robberies in Inwood and Washington Heights. His MO, according to authorities, was to smear petroleum jelly on apartment door peepholes to obscure his face in case neighbors were watching before breaking locks.
At the height of his alleged spree Gonzalez was hitting multiple spots in one go. February 13 he is accused of robbing three apartments and then, on March 8, he made a go for four apartments but was unable to gain entry into the last one.
Working off a tip, the NYPD arrested Gonzalez in his home in the Bronx this morning. He now faces charges of burglary, grand larceny and petit larceny.
