Brooklyn wins for welcoming the first baby born in 2015 in the five boroughs! A baby boy named Maxim was born at Coney Island Hospital last night at exactly midnight, weighing in at 8 pounds, 8 ounces and 21 inches long, according to ABC.
Mother Alena Olenyukh had been due to give birth last Friday but baby Maxim preferred a more dramatic entrance. A crowd of 10 cheered her on and counted down to midnight as Olenuyuk made the final pushes to bring Maxim into the world. "All the things happened at the same time," proud papa Vasyl Semak told DNAInfo. "[It] was the best new year fireworks." It's the first child for both parents.
Staff at the hospital were thrilled to finally welcome the city's first baby after "many years" of waiting. "They anticipated it," explained assistant director of nursing Susan Mikus. "They knew that this would be the one." They were nearly beat out by a baby in the Bronx, who was born at 12:01 a.m..
