Good news for New York fans of birds of prey! The Bronx Zoo has adopted two new juvenile bald eagles. Though the once-endangered birds have been spotted in recent years flying in our airspace their presence in the Zoo is, uh, a much more dependable way to see our national bird in town.
Both eagles had previously been injured, which is why they are not being released back into the wild. The five-year-old male is believed to have been hit by an automobile in 2008 while the three-year-old female is thought to have been injured in a storm. Before coming to the Bronx they had been living in a wildlife refuge in New Jersey.
You can spot them for yourself at the Zoo's Birds of Prey exhibit year-round.
