Police are investigating the death of a one-year-old boy who was found unconscious in his Bronx home yesterday. Baby Richard Flood was discovered unresponsive by his mother’s boyfriend in the living room floor of a third-floor apartment where he lived on East 232nd Street at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday. Sources told NBC that the boy had a cast on his leg from a broken leg, bruises on his face, and cigarette burns on his arms.
The boy was taken to Montefiore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 24-year-old boyfriend, whose name hasn't been released, told investigators he and the baby were asleep on the couch when the baby rolled off and hit his head. Sources told NBC that the boyfriend has a history of domestic violence against an unrelated woman who was the mother of his child; an order of protection was also allegedly filed against him by the child's mother.
It's unclear where the mother was at the time of the death. No charges have been filed yet, but police are still investigating. Neighbor Betty Stewart described what she heard earlier this week: "On Monday night, I heard a lot of commotion, and I thought why is a child up this time of night? All I could attest to was a lot of banging around and a child's voice, high-pitched."
