Yesterday, two people walking along a street in the Rockaways noticed a "bag with a human leg sticking out of it."

According to the NYPD, the police responded to 14-52 Gipson Street, by Motts Basin, around 10:45 a.m. and found a black duffel bag with human remains inside. EMS "pronounced the individual deceased," and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

The Post reported that the bag washed ashore, but NBC New York says, "It's not clear how long the bag had been there, but police believe it was brought there from another location. Investigators will look to see if homeowners in the area have security cameras that may have significant footage, police said."

A woman who lives across the street told PIX 11, "This is city property so people come all the time. You should be here in the summer. 20 million people come and fish here."
