Fresh off feasting on local cheese curds and Titletown’s Sno-Cap root beer, Mayor Bloomberg has made his latest football bet with San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee over this Sunday's Giants/49ers NFC Championship Game matchup. If the Giants win, Lee will drape an iconic SF cable car in Giants flags, and will send classic sourdough bread to NYC. But if the 49ers win, Bloomberg is offering two of our most precious resources in return: fresh bagels, and naming rights to 49th Street.
If the Giants lose, Bloomberg will send a dozen bagels from Bagel Oasis in Queens to Lee. He'll also rename 49th Street in Manhattan as "49ers Street." But he might be getting a little cocky about the Giants with all those delicious Green Bay cheese curds gurgling in his stomach: “Just like Hakeem Nicks ran right past the Packers’ secondary, the Giants are going to breeze by the 49ers on their way to the Super Bowl. After Sunday, Niners fans will be left with a taste as sour as their famous bread, and the Giants will have their sights set on another trophy.”
Eli Manning had to sit out most of practice today because he has a stomach bug. But his teammates aren't worried about Eli, who has the longest consecutive games started streak by an active quarterback with 119 straight regular-season starts, third all-time behind Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. "You kidding me? They probably got some type of special virus killer that only Eli Manning can use, or something like that. I'd be sick for two weeks. He'll be good tomorrow," said defensive end Dave Tollefson.
Meanwhile, the Giants are preparing for a physical matchup with the 49ers: “This is not going to be a cute football game. It’s not going to be for the meek and mild. This is going to be a bloodbath," said defensive tackle Chris Canty.
