According to a Marist Poll, New Yorkers may like Bloomberg more than they let on. The survey [PDF] says, "a plurality of registered voters citywide—38%—say Bloomberg has been the best mayor for New York City in three decades," and 56% of New Yorkers think he is doing well in office (down from his January 69% ratings). So what were the criteria?

The poll shows that 53% of residents believe that quality of life has gotten better or stayed good in the city since Bloomberg took office the third time around, saying they feel secure and that the city is cleaner. But the Mayor didn't get off scot-free, as New Yorkers are still pissed about the economy and the MTA. 46% believe the quality of the city’s subways and buses have deteriorated, and 67% believe the economy has gotten worse during his third term. Marist Institute Director Dr. Lee M. Miringoff said, “Mayor Bloomberg has been able to keep his approval rating intact despite governing during difficult economic times. Compared with his predecessors, so is his legacy.”

Mayor Rudy Giuliani came in second place, with 31% of residents thinking he was the best mayor. Ed Koch got 15%, David Dinkins received 9%, and 7% were simply unsure who their favorite mayor was. Bloomberg also probably got high rankings for his masterful puns. He recently tweeted, "MB hosts Greek reception at Gracie. Perfect timing too - with Clash of the Titans in theaters and Yankee Stadium cheering for a 'Homer!'"
