A Brooklyn prosecutor revealed that the City Hall staffer who was struck during a Brooklyn hit-and-run in February is likely to die within the next two months. Assistant DA Gayle Dampf said, "Her family and I hoped that Erinn might pull through, but that might have been false hope."
Erinn Phelan, 22, a coordinator in the mayor's volunteerism effort office, was crossing the street at Flatbush and Prospect Place in Prospect Heights with friend Alma Guererro, 23, when a car came down the street. Phelan apparently pushed Guererro out of the way and suffered the brunt of the impact. Guererro was injured with a broken collarbone while Phelan suffered serious head injuries that left her in a coma. The Honda Accord was found abandoned blocks away and it turned out the owner's sister was driving the car. After nearly three weeks, Frances Jasmin turned herself in to police. Her lawyer said she was checked into a hospital after realizing she hit the women.
According to the Post, Dampf said that Jasmin, who currently faces a class E felony with the charge of leaving the scene of an accident, "could escalate to a class D felony -- which guarantees prison time." Dampf said, "The fact that someone can get probation for ruining this girl and her family's life just doesn't sit well with me." Jasmin's lawyer claims her client asks about Phelan daily.
