Last night around 9 p.m. a baby was found abandoned in Renaissance Playground in Harlem. Marcus Allen, who discovered the baby and brought her to firefighters, said, "What is a baby doing out here this time of the night in the cold?"
The baby, who appears to be three months old, was dressed in warm clothes and wasn't even crying, according to Allen, who lives across the street. He added, "I couldn't believe my eyes. I needed to come closer to see what was really going on. I don't know what [the parents] intentions were. All I know is that when I looked out that window, that child was there, and I just couldn't imagine who would leave their child out there that way."
The park, located at West 143rd Street between Adam C. Powell and Frederick Douglass Boulevards, is across from a firehouse. Firefighters brought the baby to Harlem Hospital for observation, and police are investigating. WCBS 2 points out, "New York does have a 'safe haven law' which allows parents to leave babies at places like fire houses and hospitals without facing legal charges, but only if the infant is younger than 30 days."
