On Saturday, a man was charged with allegedly killing his girlfriend's 19-month-old daughter. The Queens DA's office says that little Anniyah Levant died from blunt impact injuries to the head and torso and "suffered fractures and internal injuries, including a broken jaw, broken ribs, a lacerated liver and spleen, bruising on her face and internal abdominal bleeding." DA Richard Brown said that defendant Shannon Allen's "alleged actions are incomprehensible and should result in him spending the rest of his life in prison."
Anniyah's mother Candice Jones went to work on Wednesday night and left the toddler in the care of Allen. He allegedly called her early Thursday and said there was something wrong with the baby. Jones took her to the hospital, where Anniyah was pronounced dead. Jones later told the police that the child fell from a bunk bed.
But according to the Queens DA's office, Allen went to a friend's house, while Jones was at the hospital, and asked the friend to provide an alibi: "It is further alleged that when the friend asked why, Shannon responded that he had hit Candice and the baby fell to the floor and became seriously injured." Allen is being held without bail on second-degree murder charges while it's unclear whether Jones will face charges.
