Today is one of those days when the atmosphere disagrees with itself, giving us blah, overcast skies. Surface high pressure sitting just southeast of the city is providing a somewhat cool, dry air near the ground, but a few miles above a disturbance is approaching the area. There's just enough moisture, and the shortwave has enough energy, to produce clouds, but not enough for rain—so we're looking at overcast skies and a high in the mid to upper 60s this afternoon.

Tomorrow is a different story. A pretty potent storm is getting wound up over the Midwest and that will begin affecting New York overnight tonight. It appears that light rain or intermittent showers will occur late tonight and last all day Tuesday. Wednesday will probably be rainy and showery but the forecast details are tricky. The National Weather Service models put us in a thunderstormy situation while the European Centre forecast model, which is a better model, keeps us out of the thunderstorms. Either way we should at least see showers and a high in the low 70s.

The chance of rain will diminish and cooler air will arrive on Thursday as the cold front finally passes through the area. Look for Thursday's high to be in the lower 60s. Sunny skies return on Friday and your mom is going to like the weekend weather. Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be mostly sunny with highs around 70.
