A week after a car careened off the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and barreled into a strip of Long Island City stores, it's happened again this morning. The car careened off the bridge into the same group of stores. The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. and MyFoxNY reports, "The driver of a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta driving Queens-bound on the lower level of the Queensboro Bridge lost control and crashed into a building at Crescent Street and Queens Plaza."
The driver, 39, was arrested at the scene and he suffered a partial arm amputation. The 40-year-old passenger suffered head trauma. A witness to the aftermath said, "I came and they were pulling people out of the car, a girl and a guy; the guy was just screaming. The girl could not even breathe, they were putting the mask on her," adding, "The city should do something to protect pedestrians, a bump on the ramp or something. "This is two times. This could have hit my store; I have three employees inside." The ramp had been renovated, for pedestrian safety improvement, but it's apparently reduced visibility.
There are delays off of Queens Plaza South as the police continue to investigate. In the March 28 crash, the driver, who also lost his arm, fatally struck a 68-year-old man who was on the sidewalk.
