The Port Authority is investigating adding a second bus lane to the Lincoln Tunnel. There's a bus lane already (carved out of a westbound lane between 6:15-10AM), which carries 51% of all passengers who use the tunnel, but the Post calls it a "victim of its own success," since it's operating at capacity. The second bus lane would be for buses - and perhaps for drivers who would pay a premium toll (over the current $6).
Now, anyone who has ever traveled from NJ to NYC via the Lincoln Tunnel during a weekday rush hour knows that the approach is incredibly harrowing, especially if you're not in a bus lane. The PA might look at converting an eastbound lane into the additional bus lane - which is certainly incentive to either take NJ Transit or Shortline or pay up.
The Port Authority released its findings from a bus study (PDF) last fall; in it, one of the other alternatives is building another roadway, which also seems wild since that would mean even more construction.
