All your illegally downloaded Ninja Turtles movies and those upskirt photos you took at Six Flags are in jeopardy: Megaupload's servers may be liquidated as early as Thursday. According to the AP, the two companies that store the data aren't getting paid because authorities froze Megaupload's assets when they shut the site down earlier this month.
A deal is being negotiated between Megaupload and the U.S. to keep the files safe or return them to their owners, but the government doesn't need the data. They copied what was necessary at trial, and aren't allowed to access anything beyond what the search warrants specified. If anything, deleting Megaupload's files would be like deleting evidence: bad news for CEO Kim Dotcom.
"We're cautiously optimistic at this point that because the United States, as well as Megaupload, should have a common desire to protect consumers, that this type of agreement will get done," Megaupload's attorney said. Man, Kim really needs to dig a little deeper if all he's paying for is "cautious optimism."
