Subway crime is nothing compared to what it used to be in the bad old days. But between 2010 and 2012 it has been an increasing problem. One which transit police believe to finally be on the downswing again. In the first two months of 2013 there were 97 incidents of subway crime reported, down from 170 in the first two months of 2012. Not bad!
Looking at a bit of a bigger sample of stats, the number of incidents has declined in seven of the last eight months when compared to the year prior. That means a drop from 1,912 incidents to 1,777. Which isn't quite as impressive, but still is a distinct improvement.
So what is behind the dip? A little of this, a little of that. In the last few years police have done everything from upping police coverage in stations to pushing users to be more vigilant of the ongoing problem of iCrime. Still, even if a bite out of subway crime has been made, the problem will never go away entirely. So don't start throwing your fancy baubles around willy-nilly, okay?
