A fire in a Flatbush apartment early this morning killed an 8-year-old boy, and authorities say it was caused by a space heater. The fire department says the blaze broke out at about 2:50 a.m. at 2773 Bedford Avenue near Farragut Road, and raged for nearly an hour.

Fire marshalls have attributed the fire to a space heater that was placed too close to combustibles, and say the home did not have a working fire alarm. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, and a civilian and firefighter were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries. Space heaters are known for causing fires when used improperly; the FDNY recommends following safety procedures when warming homes and apartments with heaters in the winter.
