A man was killed at a homeless shelter in the Bronx overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, police officials said as they continued to investigate the incident.
First responders discovered the 59-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive just after midnight at the facility on East 146th Street near Third Avenue in Mott Haven, according to the NYPD. Police said he had trauma to his head and face, and was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.
The NYPD has not publicly identified the man. The city medical examiner’s office was working to determine his exact cause of death.
Officials have not announced any arrests. Police said the man was a resident of the low-barrier shelter, which is run by the nonprofit Comunilife, according to state and city records.
In a statement, Blanca Ramirez, Comunilife's president and CEO, expressed condolences over the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at our Bronx Safe Haven facility. On behalf of everyone at Comunilife, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the resident who passed away," Ramirez said. "The well-being of our residents is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation and will provide all necessary assistance to help determine the circumstances surrounding this incident."
The NYPD’s 40th Precinct, which includes Mott Haven, had recorded two homicides so far this year through March 2, police data shows. That was the same amount as at the same point last year.
