In case your mother wasn't already freaked out enough about cheap bus travel, five people were hospitalized after a New York-bound Megabus crashed into a guardrail on a Maryland interstate yesterday afternoon. Thankfully, it appears no one was seriously injured.
According to authorities, the 74-passenger Megabus, which was traveling from Washington D.C., blew a tire and struck the guardrail on the I-95 at Exit 89, near Havre de Grace, Maryland around 3:40 p.m. yesterday. All the northbound lanes near that exit were closed, with two of them reopening at 5 p.m. , backing up traffic.
The bus remained upright, and no other vehicles were involved. Five of the bus passengers were transported to Hartford Memorial with unknown injuries, though officials say that was just a precaution. The driver of the bus reportedly hinted the vehicle may have had some technical malfunction. "Megabus.com is aware that an incident has occurred on Interstate 95 near Webster Village, Maryland," Sean Hughes, a spokesperson for Coach USA North America, said in a statement. "We are currently working with local officials to gather details of the incident. Safety is Megabus.com 's number one priority."
Megabus is a low-cost bus company that offers trips to-and-from DC for as little as $18; it also travels to destinations all over the United States and to parts of Canada. In 2012, a double-decker Megabus crashed into a bridge near Syracuse, NY, killing four passengers and injuring dozens more.
