Firefighters were scrambling to get a four-alarm fire under control at a house in Kensington, Brooklyn, on Friday evening, the FDNY said.
The blaze broke out at a three-story building at 413 East 3rd St. around 5:45 p.m. and sent smoke throughout the area, according to the department. It was initially categorized as a three-alarm fire but was eventually upgraded to four alarms.
The FDNY said 168 fire and emergency medical personnel responded to the flames, which were placed under control shortly after 9 p.m.
City officials warned residents in the area to avoid the smoke and close their windows. They also said the emergency response could cause traffic in the area, with several street closures in effect.
At least one person was listed in critical condition. The cause of the fire remains unclear though fire officials said high winds exacerbated the blaze.
