Police were looking for two suspects on Tuesday morning after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed in a Queens apartment building on Monday afternoon.

Officials said Ikechukwu Onodu was shot in his chest around 4:40 p.m. on 86th Drive and 209th Street in Jamaica Estates. First responders took him to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Onodu lived in Queens Village, about two miles away from where he was killed.

The NYPD was investigating a motive for the shooting and described the suspects as men in their mid-20s. Police said one was wearing a yellow hoodie and the other was wearing all black. Both suspects fled on foot on 86th Drive, according to officials.

Seven people have been fatally shot across the city so far this year, compared to 12 by the same point last year, NYPD data compiled by Gothamist shows.

Onodu is the second person to die from gun violence in Queens so far this year, after 51-year-old Sherman Walker was gunned down in St. Albans, about two miles away, on Jan. 18.

Police data shows shootings are rare in the NYPD’s 107th Precinct, which includes the northern Queens neighborhoods of Fresh Meadows, Cunningham Heights, Jamaica Estates and Briarwood. There were no fatal shootings in the precinct in 2023, according to Gothamist’s analysis, and two in 2024.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
