An 18-year-old woman who died from a gunshot wound at a Midtown public housing complex over the weekend was the victim of a homicide, city medical examiners said Wednesday.
Police officers discovered the teenager just before 1 a.m. Sunday as they responded to a 911 call about an assault inside the Harborview Terrace complex on West 55th Street near 10th Avenue, according to the NYPD. Officials said she was shot in her head and was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital.
Police initially said they were looking into the possibility that the woman committed suicide. But the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined she was killed by another person, according to a spokesperson.
A family member identified her as Kimberly Olmos Javier. The NYPD said Wednesday it was still investigating her death and did not have a description of a possible suspect. Officials said she lived in University Heights in the Bronx.
Four other homicides were reported in the Midtown North Precinct through Oct. 26 this year, compared to three by the same point last year, NYPD data shows. Shootings in the precinct have declined slightly year over year, to three as of that date.
Olmos Javier was killed just hours after 16-year-old Tyson Harps was fatally shot on Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway on Saturday night. She is the 25th teenager to die from gun violence so far this year across New York City, according to police reports compiled by Gothamist. Police have not made any arrests in either case.
