A schoolyard basketball game turned bloody yesterday afternoon on West 77th Street near Columbus Avenue. Police arrested a 12-year-old student who allegedly threw a knife at another player after a shoving match broke out during a game. The blade, which was longer than four inches, struck the student below the knee. Luckily it seems it didn't strike any major arteries, and the victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment.
The alleged assailant, a student at West Prep Middle School, was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment. He'll also face disciplinary charges at the school. The Daily News reports that the student, who was not immediately identified, screamed at photographers "No! Don't take my photo!" as police escorted him out of the school building without handcuffs. Apparently, the News is respecting his request because there's no picture of him in the paper! At press time, it was unclear who won the game.
