The Times's "On the Runway" blog is reporting on the latest trend to go with potbellies and foodie yoga: gray hair! It seems celebrities and fashionistas everywhere are going silver for spring. Manhattan salon Whittemore House started getting requests for gray streaks about six month ago, with owner Victoria Hunter saying, “When one gets on the bandwagon, they all do.” Not in the fashion world!

The trend has largely been embraced by the younger crowd who don't have to actually worry about growing gray hair, with Nielsen reports showing older women spent $1.3 billion covering their grays last year. Gray dye sessions can run $200 in Manhattan. Fashion experts everywhere are chiming in about what this trend could possibly mean. Womens Studies professor Rose Weitz said, “These women are showing that they have the money and the inclination to make gray a fashion statement. It takes confidence to pull off the look," and suggested that this may be the end of one of fashion's last taboos. Stylist Paul Mojito says the shade is "all about individuality — and something close to inaccessibility."

And Faran Krentcil, Nylon magazine employee, went gray last month after a botched attempt to dye her hair lavender. She enjoys the mistake, calling it “kind of mystic, like Galadriel.” If that's the trend, look out next for a spread on "Ear Pointing."
