The debate over the West Side stadium plan for the Jets is ongoing. If it gets built, there will most likely be a corporate name slapped onto it. With so many companies calling the New York Region home, and what's sure to be a high-profile stadium, the naming rights for it could be quite costly. A March article from Bloomberg had fees in range of $7-10 million per year. Over 30 years, the naming fees could amount to $300 while the stadium itself would cost $800 million. The money obviously isn't upfront, but it would certainly help the bottom line of Jets owner Woody Johnson and provide a nice stream of revenue, assuming the sponsor doesn't go bankrupt.
If the sponsor does have troubles, the Jets could re-name the stadium or enter another contract. Sunday's Times looked at the business of naming stadiums, including new and old stadiums. The Times reports that over half of all professional stadiums are named at a total of $3.6 billion. With few methods of measuring the effects of naming rights, it can be difficult to measure the value of a company naming a stadium, but M&T Bank and Petco feel they have both made out. By naming the Baltimore Raven's stadium M&T Bank Stadium, M&T increased their brand recognition from nothing to 3rd of 18 banks in their surveys. Petco Park for the San Diego Padres has exposed the Petco name 200 million times in four months according to company representatives.
All this talk of sponsorships got Gothamist wondering - "what companies in the New York area could name the stadium?" We also came up with some pointless taglines for the sponsors.
Snapple Stadium - "Sugaring up the children of New York."
Citicorp Field - "Giving out more bonuses than we know what to do with."
The TimeWarner Stadium - "Ritzing up the West Side since 2004, ripping off New Yorkers for years."
Bloomberg Field - "For the Billionaire Who Has Everything."
Tasty D-Lite Stadium - "Putting the D-Lite in the D-Line."
Trump Field - "Making the NYC lovably tacky."
Conde Nast Stadium - "Where Our Employees Can Learn About Masculine Rituals"
News Corp Field (who is moving headquarters to NYC) - "Tight Ends, Right Wings."
Genovese Stadium - "Our Attempt to Go Legit."
What are some of your suggestions for the planned stadium for the Jets?
