2006_04_smetslogo.jpg-Dodgers 5 Mets 0: Hong-Chih Kuo was impressive in his first major league start, surrendering only three hits over six shutout innings. LA got all the runs they would need in the first off of an error by David Wright. The loss and the Phillies win keeps the Mets’ magic number at 7.

-Baltimore 9 Yankees 4: Cory Lidle didn’t have it from the start, giving up a two-run homer in the first and getting into trouble in the second before being lifted for a reliever. By the time the inning was over, Baltimore had a 6-0 lead and never looked back. The Yankees still saw their magic number decrease to 14 as Boston lost 10-9 to Kansas City.

-Henin-Hardenne and Sharapova reach the U.S. Open Finals: Henin-Hardenne advanced after falling a set and a break behind Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic seemed more interested in fighting with the umpire and lost her concentration while Henin-Hardenne’s creaky back suddenly healed. Here’s hoping we don’t have a repeat of her performance at the Australian Open in the final tomorrow.

Sharapova came out and dominated Amelie Mauresmo in the first set 6-0, but then lost the second 4-6. Apparently that was the wake up she needed as she bore down and won the third set 6-0 to advance to the finals.
